Irrelevant anchors by competitors

Hi

Top 5 competitors and may be more are using irrelevant anchors related to porn, Viagra and such things. These are not at all related to service provided. I have analysed top 6-7 competitors and all have such anchors from free websites like comments/profiles etc.

I am not sure why they do that? Is it to generate traffic?
why there is no negative effect on rankings?
Should I do the same thing?
