Fresh Articles vs Old Articles with New Links

Hello, does anybody know whether it's a better to purchase links on a page that is already ranking well but is old, or to create a new piece of content and just cross your fingers that it ranks highly again?

I've found what is basically a spun article on a magazine site that ranks well for a keyword we are targeting. Traffic wise it could be a great link to have, but the ad sales rep has told me they no longer allow link insertion and the only option is to write a new article and pay them to publish it. The site itself isn't directly relevant to our niche and it's Moz score is 37, so it's not exactly groundbreaking, but they are asking for £125 to host content with up to 3 links.

Any input would be really appreciated as I'm not sure whether to push for the link embed or whether to start discussing creating a new piece of content.
