Through some relationships I have, I came across an opportunity to manage the SEO efforts of a digital publishing website. Their main strategy at the moment is to build social media profiles and link to stories, thus using social media to drive traffic. They have had nearly 600k pageviews in the last month, with 62% of this traffic being direct, 30% social, 6% referral and 0.8% organic.
The offer on the table is the following:
- .5% of overall profits at the start
- 1% once organic search is pulling 25K views monthly
- 1.5% once organic is pulling 50K monthly views
- 5% + $500 bonus once organic search is pulling 100K views monthly
- 7.5% + $1,750 monthly bonus once organic is pulling 1M views monthly would include equity in the business.
Most of my experience is in product and service-related SEO for small businesses. This is something I've dreamed of doing, but I'm not 100% sure I can hit the goals they want in the timeframe they would like.
How would you approach SEO as digital publisher? Would you leverage social?
Should I counter offer?
Any thoughts would be appreciated!
