What do people think about the new Google updates?
I can’t help but think something BIG is coming - I keep coming across various changes that I haven’t seen in the SERPs up until a couple of weeks ago
Meta Titles
Obviously this was quite a big one and something that I didn’t see promoted until it hit (I thought I had changed our website settings, when I first noticed it). From all accounts hit and (a lot miss) - I’ve seen examples of H1’s and even file names used as the Meta Titles
Reason given by Google for these changes
Inaccurate titles Obsolete titles Half-empty titles
Which was then followed up with Google stating that title elements are used around 87% of the time, rather than around 80% before.
So can’t help but think with all good intentions this didn’t quite go to plan but further changes are coming.
On the Meta Title changes I have also noticed that it is now very much aligned with search intent, especially in the case where various KeyWords are used within the title
KeyWord 1 | KeyWord 2 | Brand Name
Google will almost always select the searched keyword (or closest too) and brand name
KeyWord 1 - Brand Name
Sub Results
Seeing a lot of indented sub results on #google SERPs. This is where you have the main result, followed by other results (meta title and description) slightly indented underneath
Looks odd and slightly disjointed but got to love the real estate that you can gain on page 1!
Double Meta Descriptions
This has also been pointed out, where pages that have HTML tables seem to be given double meta description space
Again love the real estate value here and have site links too
Has anyone spotted anything else? Or do you guys have any thoughts on the changes they have made?
