Anyone ever encounter blog category pages are ranking instead of the actual posts?

I'm stumped with my friend's small business site. I've only been doing in-house SEO for a little over 2 years, but this is still peculiar.

Here's the situation:

  1. Searching for the keywords that each post targets makes either the main blog page or the blog category page show on SERPs. The actual blog post is not even in the top 100 results.
  2. Blog page and category pages show the title of each post and a small excerpt (2-4 short sentences worth). Category pages only have 2 posts max under them.
  3. Blog posts are indexed and only show on SERPs when you search specifically for post title + domain name. No errors in search console.
  4. Blog posts are between 1-3 months old with 1000+ words of unique content with a few internal and external links (not affiliate links)
  5. There are no hidden noindexing or nofollowing or htaccess blocking shenanigans that I can see (crawled in SEMrush and the frog)

The site is built on Wordpress with a purchased theme. The theme isn't the lightest/fastest but no big issues otherwise. Do you have a clue what's going on here?
