Hi all...I tried to post this to r/BigSEO but it got marked as spam, so I guess I'll try here.
I work with a small business owner who's had success selling his product on his Shopify store (food/bev industry, commodity). One of his top-selling products is listed in several reviews as one of the best within its flavor/category. These articles rank in the top 10 of a high volume keyword (for the industry) and have fairly good domain authority.
The problem is that all of the links from those articles go to a company that re-distributes his product in smaller quantities, with the same branding, bundled with other similar products, as a subscription service. We supply this subscription company with our product, and this business relationship has existed long before I got here. It's worked out well for everyone.
In all of the reviews, nowhere are there links to the small business owner's site or even acknowledgment that he's the one that produces this top-reviewed product. One of the publishers even incorrectly credits the subscription service with making the product.
Obviously, this subscription company has forged affiliate relationships with these publishers long before the business owner could even pay attention to this stuff.
How could I approach trying to get a backlink from these review sites? Is it a lost cause?
I come from a service journalism background, so gut instinct would be to make an appeal accuracy (i.e. say "don't you want to credit the true producer of this product?"). But I know that won't work lol.
We use Refersion as an affiliate app on Shopify, but I have no idea where to begin in terms of trying to make a competitive "offer" because. At the end of the day, it feels like we're at their mercy. I'm also not trying to blow up any previous affiliate relationship because, after all, we see business from that relationship. All I'd like is for this biz owner to get a little bit of credit (and a dang link).
Any thoughts on this? Anyone been in a similar situation? Thank you all for any help.
