There's one page in my niche that had won the featured snippets for most of the main relevant keywords. This leads to them getting between 30-50% of traffic for these keywords (according to Ahrefs).
This article is short (under 1000 words) and less comprehensive than most other competitors.
It has 6 total backlinks - 4 of them from a DR1 registry type website, 1 normal backlink from a DR18 website, and one nofollow link from a DR71 website that is not in English for the most part and looks pretty sketchy. This backlink profile is one of the worst of the competitors on the first page.
The websites overall DR is 43, which is lower than many competitors on the first page.
The article was written in 2012 and not updated since - the other competitors have all updated their articles much more recently.
The featured snippet contains a random paragraph - it doesn't even appear to be formatted as a list or anything special.
My question is, what could this competitor be doing in order to get the featured snippet?
Is it luck? Or are there some optimization methods that can specifically target featured snippets?
This competitor getting the snippets has led to their article receiving far more traffic than any other article on the topic, which is frustrating since in my mind it's a pretty weak article.
