ccTLD Usage - Does it penalize global rankings?

I'm a Canadian student (hopefully grad student soon) and I want to buy and rank my personal domain.

My options are basically JaneSmith.org and JBSmith.ca. (includes my middle name) My name is very common.

I'm trying to weigh off the two options.

First off, as a grad student, I'll probably be applying to positions offered by old people who are used to seeing .org for organizations, not people.

Secondly, I understand that .ca gives a Geographical ranking bonus for Canadian searchers. Would it penalize my rankings for a global audience (e.g. US)? I'm concerned that by using the .ca, I would actually be limiting my audience to other Canadian academics.

tl;dr is JaneSmith.org or JBSmith.ca better for a global audience of old people who don't know .org can be used by persons?
