Would domain like "name.surname.com" instead of just "surname.com" hurt my SEO?

Hello everyone! I'm just a simple programmer creating portfolio-like website and I need your advice on topic of domain name and how (if at all) could it affect my SEO.

I bought a domain "surname.com" , where "surname" is obviously my own real life surname. However, there are a lot of people with same surname as mine so I got the idea to make it even more distinguishable by adding my name to the mix in a form of subdomain, so my website address would like like this: "john.smith.com".

I remember researching the topic of "www." in web addresses and the bottom line was that it doesn't matter as long as I stay consistent to one form, ideally setting up some redirection from incorrect address to correct one.

Would it be the same with having "name." as my subdomain? If someone would connect to "surname.com" I would obviously make server redirect visitor to "name.surname.com" address (with proper 501 redirection).

I'm not sure sure if this wouldn't hurt my SEO since I wouldn't use my "root" domain path? On the other hand it feels like it might even be somewhat beneficial for me since search engines might make it even easier to find >me< among other people with the same surname (when I look my name, there are tons of results of other people facebook pages etc).

In advance, thank you for your time and responses. _^
