Lawyer: separate sites for different practice areas?

I am lawyer who practices criminal defense and personal injury.

I have a site, www.MyName.com, that I have started SEO for criminal keywords. I have been told it is extremely difficult to optimize for both criminal and injury keywords (law is one of the toughest SEO markets).

I also want optimize for personal injury key words.

Should I :

  1. Create an injury subdomain on my main site: Personal-Injury.MyName.com, or

  2. Optimize a completely separate domain www.MyCityPersonalInjuryLawyer.com.

If I succeed in optimizing the injury site (or subdomain) and decide to later merge it to my main site, will I be able to do a 301 redirect and save most of my Google authority?

Thanks in advance!
