Meta-data & page auditing; an effort worth doing?

How do changes to these various page aspects affect key SEO metrics (entrances)?

  • title
  • meta description
  • keywords
  • h1 element
  • h2 elements
  • # of links, internal and unique
  • # of images and their attributes

Should changes to any of the above be audited and compared to traffic figures?

Sometimes I wonder whether I'm trying to be smarter than search engines, that's why I'm asking. I know and agree that content is king. But would/should changes to any of the above affect individual page (and site) ranking? Thanks!
